One thing that’s readily apparent in this breakdown is the BMW’s porky 3000-plus-pound curb weight. That, along with an engine that’s significantly less powerful than the Boxster takes a toll on the BMW’s performance compared to the Porsche. Yes, 0-60 in 5.2 seconds is pretty fast, but just to put it in context, that’s about on par with the performance of a Honda Accord equipped with the turbo 2.0 liter four and ten-speed automatic. The curb weight of the Lexus practically puts it in an entirely different category and takes a toll on its acceleration, as it’s over a half-ton heavier than the Boxster. Many also find the styling of the Lexus to be an acquired taste.
The Boxster is also more stable and predictable on the skidpad and around corners, with precise steering and response that’s akin to a race car, while the BMW’s seven different drive modes for steering, engine, transmission and suspension are likely to be too fussy for many drivers.
2020 Porsche 718 Boxster Driveability Comparison
The Boxster carries on the Porsche tradition in every way that you’d expect. It’s tight and solid in the curves, with the turbocharged flat-four engine delivering plenty of punch when you put your foot in it and swinging the rear end around in a very controllable way if you step on it a little harder in the curves. The ride is firm but compliant, and the Boxster doesn’t get all jittery and lose its composure on rough pavement.
The Porsche’s interior is a little Spartan, and although it comes standard with a backup camera and blind spot alert, be prepared to pay extra for things like navigation and adaptive cruise control. Cargo space is a little cramped, but you’re probably not buying a Boxster for hauling groceries anyway. All in all, the Porsche 718 Boxster is aimed at a Porsche driver’s expectations, and fulfills them in ways that the BMW Z4 and Lexus LC can’t.
