Porsche 911 Carrera vs Jaguar F-Type and Mercedes-Benz GT

Timeless and iconic, the Porsche 911 Carrera is the latest iteration of the proven Porsche design, first introduced in 1963. The exterior styling is a logical progression of the original 911 concept, and it remains unmistakably Porsche. A lot has changed in the last 50-plus years, of course, and the 911 has evolved into its eighth generation with all the technological advances you’d expect. That being said, how does it compare against the competition? We take a look at the 911 Carrera vs the Jaguar F-Type and Mercedes-Benz GT.

  911 Carrera Jaguar F-Type Mercedes-Benz GT
Max. Power 443 hp 550 hp 469 hp
Max. Torque 390 lb-ft 502 lb-ft 465 lb-ft
Engine 3.8 liter H6 Supercharged 5.0 liter V8 4.0 liter V8
0-60 mph 3.0 seconds 3.5 seconds 3.4 seconds

Any way you cut it, this is some supercar performance. The 911 Carrera has rocket-sled performance from 0-60, and all that torque is delivered to the road with sure-footed AWD platform and torque vectoring that allots power precisely to each wheel. Its 20-inch wheels (21-inch optional) and accurate, responsive paddle shift technology make for an amazing, exhilarating driving experience whenever you get behind the wheel. At 3,382 lbs curb weight, the 911 is considerably lighter than the F-type (4,105 lbs) and the Benz (3,560 lbs), which makes a considerable difference in the Porsche’s road feel and handling.

2019 Porsche 911 Carrera Fuel Economy and Range Comparison

City/HWY MPG (Automatic) 22 MPG/30 MPG 16 MPG/ 24 MPG 16 MPG/22 MPG

There’s a clear winner when it comes to fuel economy: the 911. The Benz and Jaguar’s power and performance come with a distinct tradeoff when it comes to gas mileage, especially around the streets of Chicago. 30 mpg on the highway and 22 around town with the Porsche’s 3.8 liter flat-six engine beats the Jaguar’s numbers of 16 and 24 mpg or the Benz at 16 and 22 mpg any day of the week. When it comes to the Jaguar, there’s even a little more sting in that dismal fuel economy when you remember it will only run well on premium unleaded.

2019 Porsche 911 Carrera Drivability Comparison

If you’re used to seeing analog dials on the dashboard of a Porsche, you might be surprised a bit by the 911 Carrera’s all-new digital dashboard display, although the tach is still analog and takes you right up to a 7500 rpm redline. For the first time, the 911 has a large cupholder front-and-center, and it’s available with driver assistance such as lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control, accident avoidance and even night vision. Ride quality is firm but forgiving, and the 911 is now available in a 2 + 2 format so you can take a couple of passengers.

The Benz doesn’t quite have the 911’s crisp handling and while it offers some niceties like a state-of-the-art infotainment system, it’s a bit on the fussy side to use and has a ride that can be downright punishing. Reviewers have noted that the Jaguar’s interior is a little dated and could offer a better driving position and overall fit and finish, which you’d expect for a sport coupe at that price point. The Jaguar also suffers from poor visibility due to its rear window and low profile, and of course you can forget about taking more than one passenger along.
